Traffic movement on the Chandmari flyover in Guwahati will remain partially restricted for the next 30 days as construction work begins to connect the existing structure with the upcoming GNB flyover.
According to traffic officials, the work will be carried out in phases. During the construction period, the flyover will be closed lane-wise on an alternate basis, with each lane remaining shut for 15 days. Commuters have been advised to avoid the flyover as far as possible and use alternative routes to prevent congestion in the area.
To manage traffic flow, authorities have identified several diversion routes for vehicles coming from different directions.
Vehicles approaching from the Zoo Road side can move towards Rajgarh Road either via Apurba Sinha Path or directly through Rajgarh Road. From there, they may proceed through South Sarania Road, GS Road and Dr B Baruah Road to reach GNB Road.
Similarly, vehicles coming from the Chandmari side have been advised to use MRD Road while travelling towards Bamunimaidam. From MRD Road, commuters can either take the Railway Colony Road towards Hatigarh Chariali or use the Noonmati–Mathgharia route.
Traffic officials said the diversions are aimed at easing pressure on the Chandmari junction, which remains one of the busiest traffic points in the city.
City Buses Told to Follow Lane Discipline
In a separate set of instructions, city buses have been directed to strictly follow lane discipline during the construction period. Bus operators have been asked to ply only on the left-most lane and avoid overtaking to reduce traffic congestion at Chandmari.
The advisory also reiterated a decision taken during an RTA Board meeting held in October last year, which mandates left-lane driving by city buses across the city. As per permit conditions, diesel-run city buses are also barred from overtaking from the left side or overtaking other buses operating on the same route.
Traffic police have appealed to commuters to cooperate with the arrangements and follow traffic rules to ensure smoother movement during the construction work.
